Cruise ships berth at Souda's commercial port. The Hellenic Ports Association describes cruise quays and gives approximate distances of 6–7 km to Chania in different parts of its guide. This is a dock port with a road transfer to the old town, rather than an arrival beside Chania's Venetian harbour.

Follow the passenger exit from your berth to the Souda Port bus boarding point. Allow for the journey through the port as well as the road transfer.

Keep the name Souda available when arranging the journey back, since requesting the harbour in Chania can point to the historic waterfront.

About this port

Souda is the cruise gateway for Chania, where the old town and Venetian harbour provide a manageable focus for a first visit. The ship's berth and the historic waterfront are separate places. Plan the day around a transfer into Chania, time on foot and a return to Souda.

With a few hours ashore, a harbour walk and one museum are a sensible combination. Travelling across western Crete to a distant beach leaves much less time in the city and needs a carefully arranged return.

Getting Around

Chania Urban Bus route 13 links Souda Port with Chania. The operator’s timetable names the city boarding area Epimelitirio–Agora (Chamber of Commerce–Market). Allow for the walk between this stop and the old harbour, and use the Souda-bound service for the return.

On Sundays, daytime departures from Souda Port are hourly under the service notice effective 10 October 2026, checked 2026-10-15. Leave room for the wait as well as the ride, and look up the Chania-to-Souda times separately before setting off.

A taxi or booked transfer can suit passengers who need a direct journey or want to include an outlying attraction. Agree the destination and price basis before departing. City traffic can lengthen the return journey.

Once in the old town, walking links the harbour sights. Cobblestones, crowds and the longer sea-wall walk can make the outing more demanding than it first appears. Choose a turning point that leaves a comfortable return margin.

Things to Do

Venetian harbour: make the waterfront the centre of a short visit. The municipal tourism guide identifies Firkas Fortress on the western side, Yali Tzamii and the Venetian shipyards farther around the harbour. These give a useful sequence for a walk without requiring entry to every building. The lighthouse can be appreciated across the water; reaching it along the sea wall adds walking.

Maritime history: the Maritime Museum of Crete occupies the Firkas area. It is a convenient subject to pair with the harbour architecture, provided its visitor arrangements fit your day. Check opening with the venue rather than relying on generic town shop hours.

Archaeological Museum: this is in Chalepa, at 15 Skra Street, away from the old harbour. Its collections cover the Chania region from early settlement through antiquity. It’s closed on Tuesdays; full admission is €15 (checked 2026-10-15). From Chania, take bus 11 towards Halepa and get off at Katsampas or Venizelos House. If you’d rather walk, the official visitor page gives about 30 minutes from Chania’s Municipal Market to the museum. Allow time for this extra journey and the galleries after your transfer from Souda.

Suda Bay War Cemetery: visitors interested in the Second World War can consider a dedicated stop at the Commonwealth cemetery. The CWGC visitor page describes steps at the main entrance and an alternative entrance path to its right. Check the full access description if needed and arrange return transport; the cemetery is separate from the old-town walk.

Getting back to your ship
