Cruise ships dock at the modern port. The municipality identifies the eastern passenger sector as a cruise and ferry area, while the western commercial sector may also accommodate tourist vessels. The small Venetian harbour is a sightseeing destination, not a promise of where your ship will berth.

The port is beside the town, and the official Greek ports directory places the town centre 200 metres away. Follow the marked passenger route through the working port and establish the return gate before leaving.

Do not walk directly across an open operational area. A taxi or arranged transfer may still be helpful if the approved exit route is difficult for your mobility needs.

About this port

Rethymnon, also written Rethymno, is a compact cultural stop on Crete's north coast. The old town sits below the Venetian Fortezza, with lanes leading towards the small Venetian harbour and the seafront. A walking day can combine the fortress, historic streets and a relaxed meal without a long transfer across the island.

For a first call, keep your route within the town. Rethymnon rewards time spent looking at streets and buildings as much as ticking off individual monuments. If you prefer less climbing, leave out the fortress and build the visit around the harbour and lower old town.

Getting Around

Walking is the most straightforward approach once in the old town. Use the Venetian harbour and Fortezza as landmarks, with the Rimondi Fountain as a useful stop inside the lanes. Allow extra time for uneven paving, crowds and the uphill approach to the fortress.

For regional journeys, KTEL Chania–Rethymno publishes current departures from Rethymno. Use the boarding point as well as the timetable; a town bus station should not be assumed to be beside the cruise gangway. Choose an achievable return before travelling towards another city or an inland sight.

A town walk leaves more flexibility for sightseeing and the return to the port than an excursion involving several transport connections.

Things to Do

Fortezza. The Venetian fortress occupies Paleokastro hill above the town. Its scale and position help explain the defensive purpose of the headland. See the municipality's fortress page for background and visitor information. Bring water and take your time on exposed sections.

Venetian harbour. Make this a stop for views and a gentle pause between walks. It is especially useful if you want to enjoy the town's maritime setting without entering another attraction. Keep track of your modern-port return point: the picturesque waterfront is not necessarily where you need to reboard.

Rimondi Fountain and old-town streets. The fountain was built in 1626 in what is now Platanou Square. Its lion-head spouts and architectural details make it a distinctive landmark for a short route through the surrounding lanes. Continue towards the Porta Guora area if time and energy allow, then loop back towards the sea.
