Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: The port's range covers Torgkaien, Terminalkai Sør and Terminalkaien to central Bodø around the Visit Bodø office at Dronningens gate 15.

  • Distance: approximately 0.2–1.2 km to the centre, depending on the assigned quay.
  • Walk: realistic; Hurtigruten describes an easy walk from its Terminalveien berth, while Torgkaien is on the central waterfront.

Cruise Norway's port information identifies three cruise quays: Torgkaien, also called Town Square Quay; Terminalkai Sør; and Terminalkaien. It also records anchorage and tender arrangements as available on request. Most importantly for a passenger, the different berths do not have the same walk into town.

The factsheet gives a port-to-centre range of approximately 200 metres to 1.2 kilometres. Keep the quay name with you: Torgkaien serves the central waterfront, while a terminal berth means a longer approach.

The dependable centre option is on foot.

About this port

Bodø is a useful choice between a city visit and an excursion into the surrounding coastal landscape. The Norwegian Aviation Museum provides a substantial indoor attraction, while Saltstraumen draws visitors to a narrow strait where tidal water creates powerful currents.

For a short call, choose one of these as the main outing and leave time for the central waterfront. Saltstraumen needs both transport and attention to the tide; it is not an attraction to add casually after an unhurried museum visit.

Getting Around

The centre is a practical walking area once you have cleared the port. Keep the berth name with you, since returning to a different quay could cost valuable time.

Reis Nordland provides the regional journey planner and ticket information for buses and boats. For the Aviation Museum or a trip beyond the centre, check the actual stop, walking connection and return journey. Do not infer that a route runs frequently merely because it appears on a network plan.

Saltstraumen is about 33 kilometres from Bodø according to the destination authority. A planned coach excursion, a prearranged taxi or a carefully checked public transport journey is needed. Ask a taxi operator about the complete return arrangement before leaving; an outward ride alone does not solve the return from the attraction.

Things to Do

Visit the Norwegian Aviation Museum. Norway's national aviation museum covers both civil and military flying. Its collection includes aircraft such as a Spitfire and a U-2 reconnaissance aircraft, alongside the human stories of aviation. Consult the museum's own visitor information for current opening times, admission and accessibility, and allow time to explore rather than treating it as a brief photo stop.

See Saltstraumen at a useful stage of the tide. The destination's visitor guidance explains that the current changes through the tidal cycle. Check its current tide information before choosing a departure. The site can be viewed from land; a guided boat outing is a separate activity with its own clothing, age and mobility requirements. The strongest-looking water is not present continuously.

Explore the central waterfront. For a lighter visit, walk around the town's harbour-facing streets and choose a café or local shop. This works well before or after a principal attraction, provided you preserve the time needed to reach your own quay. A short city walk is also a sensible alternative if weather disrupts an outdoor excursion.

Keep distant outings separate. The surrounding region offers larger excursions, including coastal scenery and historic trading places. Their appearance in regional publicity does not make them quick additions to a Bodø call. Check the whole itinerary, including road and ferry transfers, before committing.

Getting back to your ship

Saltstraumen is about 33 kilometres from Bodø according to the destination authority. A planned coach excursion, a prearranged taxi or a carefully checked public transport journey is needed. Ask a taxi operator about the complete return arrangement before leaving; an outward ride alone does not solve the return from the attraction.

Practical Information

The Norwegian krone (NOK) is the local currency, and cards are widely accepted. Norwegian is spoken locally, while English is widely understood in tourism. For changing fares, opening arrangements and transport departures, use the museum, destination and Reis Nordland pages.

Carry a waterproof layer even for a city walk. For Saltstraumen, take clothing suitable for standing outdoors and shoes with grip. Keep the ship's all-aboard time separate from any excursion's advertised finishing time.

Emergency numbers are 110 for fire, 112 for police and 113 for an ambulance. Keep your ship's local contact available for transport delays.
