Overview
Lysefjord is a scenic waterway in Rogaland, associated with the cliffs of Preikestolen and Kjerag and small settlements reached by boat. An itinerary describing “cruising in Lysefjord” does not by itself promise a landing. Check whether your visit is a scenic passage, a return sightseeing trip or a ferry journey with a named shore stop.
This overview identifies the main ferry gateways and settlements. Their quays serve local vessels; inclusion here is not evidence that an ocean-going cruise ship can berth at each one. There is no single cruise terminal or pier-to-centre distance for the whole fjord.
Viewing Preikestolen from the water and hiking to its top are separate activities. The established walking route involves an eight-kilometre return hike from its inland trailhead, with substantial ascent. Allow for land transport as well as the walk if considering it during a port call. A brief pause beneath the cliff cannot be converted into that hike.
Ports in This Region
- Lauvvik: A gateway near the fjord entrance for ferries heading towards Lysebotn. Check the onward bus connection carefully before travelling there independently.
- Forsand: A village quay on the Ryfylke side, used by Lysefjord services. It can be useful for onward travel towards the Preikestolen area, provided the land connection is arranged.
- Oanes: A separate quay used for the crossing to Lauvvik and, when directed by service notices, as a temporary substitute for other departures. Confirm the actual departure quay on your ticket.
- Songesand: A small settlement on the northern shore, reached by ferry or the mountain road from Årdal. Its setting suits a quiet visit, but a short call requires a confirmed return.
- Flørli: A roadless former hydroelectric settlement, with industrial history and a long stairway climbing the slope. The full stairway walk is a substantial outing; a waterfront visit needs much less commitment.
- Lysebotn: The settlement at the inner end of the fjord is a starting point for onward travel towards Kjerag. Reaching the hiking start requires an additional transfer from the quay.
- Smaller walking-route stops: Revså, Bratteli, Bakken, Kallali and Håheller are served by selected local ferry arrangements. They are not substitutes for a village with dependable onward road transport.
Practical Information
Use the Lysefjorden 365 ferry information and Kolumbus for current departures, reservations and service changes. Different services call at different quays, and some stops require advance arrangements. Before disembarking, confirm that the return sailing actually serves your chosen landing.
The destination's notices checked on 2026-09-07 describe temporary quay substitutions and a delayed change of vessel. The local passenger boat and car ferries can use different departure quays during these changes. Follow the instructions for your particular service and date. For independent travel from a cruise ship, leave time for both the ferry connection and the journey back to the ship's berth.
Norway uses Norwegian kroner (NOK); cards are widely accepted. Norwegian is spoken locally and English is widely understood in visitor services. Carry water, a waterproof layer and suitable shoes, and check food and toilet provision before setting off for a small landing.
For an emergency, alert your vessel's crew or guide. On land, Norway's emergency numbers are 110 for fire, 112 for police and 113 for an ambulance.
