Cruise ships normally use Skjolden Cruise Pier. The separate tender pier is a contingency facility and does not by itself show that tendering is common practice.

The current port manual places the village about 1.2 km from the cruise quay, with Fjordstova around 1.3 km away. This is farther than some older descriptions suggest. Follow the designated route towards the village and allow time for the walk back, particularly if you stop frequently for photographs.

The port provides a shuttle bus service to the village centre.

About this port

Skjolden sits at the head of Lustrafjord, the inner arm of Sognefjord. The approach brings the ship between steep mountain slopes into a small village landscape. A short call can be spent enjoying the fjord and village; a longer one opens up organised journeys towards high mountain roads, glaciers or Urnes Stave Church.

Choose the scale of your outing before going ashore. The scenery immediately around Skjolden is accessible without a long transfer, while the better-known inland attractions require a planned journey and time to return through the same landscape.

Getting Around

Walking suits the village and nearby fjord frontage. For public transport beyond Skjolden, consult Skyss for current connections and tickets; do not assume a regional bus operates as a frequent sightseeing service.

If booking independent transport, establish the exact meeting point with the operator. Skjolden Port requires prior permission for outside commercial vehicles and passenger collections on its private premises. A booking elsewhere in the village does not automatically include pickup at the gangway. Port-arranged excursions are sold through the ship's tour operator.

Things to Do

Spend time in the village. Walk along the fjord towards Skjolden, leaving room for a café stop and views back down the water. The nearby lake Eidsvatnet gives another perspective on the valley setting. Keep to public routes and select a turnaround point that leaves sufficient time for the quay walk.

Visit Urnes Stave Church. Urnes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its medieval wooden architecture and carvings that connect Scandinavian artistic traditions. It is a separate excursion around Lustrafjord, rather than a church in Skjolden village. Arrange the complete transfer and admission before committing. Check the church operator's current access arrangements, including the walk from the arrival point.

Take a mountain-road excursion. The port offers journeys towards Sognefjellet and the Jotunheimen mountains. These suit passengers who want broad views without a summit hike. Road conditions and visibility can change the experience, so check the itinerary and clothing advice provided for the specific outing.

Explore glacier country. Excursions towards Jostedalen and the Nigardsbreen area may include an exhibition, a viewpoint or an activity. Those are different experiences: clarify how much walking is included and whether the trip actually goes onto ice. A glacier visit should be organised with appropriate local expertise, equipment and a return plan.

With only a few hours available, choose one of these approaches. A village walk can be extended or shortened easily, whereas a mountain or glacier outing commits you to a much larger part of the call.

Getting back to your ship

The current port manual places the village about 1.2 km from the cruise quay, with Fjordstova around 1.3 km away. This is farther than some older descriptions suggest. Follow the designated route towards the village and allow time for the walk back, particularly if you stop frequently for photographs.

Practical Information

Use Norwegian kroner (NOK). Norwegian is the local language; English is widely understood. Call 110 for fire, 112 for police or 113 for an ambulance.

Pack waterproof clothing and an extra layer for travel above the fjord. Check opening arrangements for the date of your visit, and retain the ship's return time even when daylight lasts late.
