Kings Bay's 2026 harbour regulations, checked on 2026-09-08, provide for both alongside berthing and tender landings. The main pier handles one large vessel at berth; the tender pier serves one large vessel's tenders at a time. Kings Bay's 2026 call records list the great majority of passenger-ship arrivals at the berth, so alongside docking is the normal arrangement. Arrival permission and visit arrangements are coordinated with Kings Bay. Harbour regulations

The ship must provide personnel to supervise its visitors, and security arrangements apply at both arrival points. Follow your group's release and return instructions rather than assuming you can leave as soon as a boat reaches the pier.

About this port

Prepare your electronics before a Ny-Ålesund call. This research settlement on Kongsfjorden protects sensitive instruments through restrictions on radio transmissions, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The best short visit combines the settlement's mining and polar-exploration history with careful observance of the working research environment.

Getting Around

Use the visitor route explained by the ship's guides and stay on the roads, as Kings Bay requires. Research buildings and equipment are workplaces; do not enter without permission. Kings Bay prohibits walking on the airstrip. Do not extend the visit outside the settlement on your own: Kings Bay requires polar-bear protection for travel beyond it.

Kings Bay identifies a 1.5 km nature and cultural trail around the settlement. Stay on the marked roads, boardwalks and designated walking routes.

Things to Do

The museum explains the change from mining to research and the polar expeditions associated with the settlement. The airship mast provides context for the 1926 Norge flight, whose participants included Amundsen, Ellsworth and Nobile. Follow the guide's permitted route if the mast is included in your visit.

For a limited call, our recommendation is to prioritise those historical stops over shopping. Kings Bay attempts to open the shop for cruise calls but explicitly does not guarantee it. A visit should still make sense if the shop remains closed.

Getting back to your ship

The ship must provide personnel to supervise its visitors, and security arrangements apply at both arrival points. Follow your group's release and return instructions rather than assuming you can leave as soon as a boat reaches the pier.

Practical Information

  • Radio silence: Kings Bay instructs visitors to use flight mode and separately disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on every device, including cameras and watches. Its guidance covers Ny-Ålesund and a 20 km radius, checked 2026-09-07. Flight mode alone may leave those functions active.
  • Money: Norwegian kroner (NOK). Do not rely on buying supplies during this brief visit.
  • Research priority: follow closures, signs and the supervising personnel. Keep the group's return time available without an internet connection.
