Orientation, not a walking route

The Port of Çanakkale identifies its facility as Kepez Port, on Sahil Yolu Caddesi, and publishes a 214-metre pier. Its operations include cruise vessels alongside the port's cargo business. Use the assigned passenger exit or transfer; the port's road connection and customs areas are working infrastructure.

GoTürkiye states that complimentary buses run to the city centre. Its page gives conflicting centre distances of approximately 5 km and 10 km, so neither figure is repeated here. The port association gives the berth coordinates as 40.105833° N, 26.378056° E.

About this port

For a Çanakkale call, first choose between time in the city, archaeology at Troy and a Gallipoli excursion. The cruise port at Kepez is separate from the city-centre waterfront. A plan that looks compact on a regional sightseeing list can require several road or sea transfers.

Getting Around

A Troy outing stays on the Asian side of the Dardanelles. The museum is at Tevfikiye, by the archaeological site, so ask for Troy Museum rather than simply a museum in Çanakkale. Establish whether your booking includes both museum and ruins, and allow time for each.

Gallipoli is across the strait. Ask how the excursion crosses and what allowance it makes for that journey in both directions. My recommendation for a short call is one destination area, not Troy followed by a hurried Gallipoli visit.

Things to Do

• Troy Museum and ruins: start with the museum if you want help interpreting the site's successive settlements. UNESCO recognises the Archaeological Site of Troy for its long history and connections between Anatolia and the Mediterranean. The ruins should not be approached as a complete surviving city from one period.
• A city visit: take the complimentary cruise shuttle or the municipal bus into central Çanakkale if you prefer a less structured outing. Note the return pickup before walking away from the drop-off point.
• Gallipoli Historical Area: select an organised route with named cemeteries, memorials or museums. These are distributed across the peninsula; an excursion title alone does not tell you which places it reaches.
