Cruise Gate Hamburg operates alongside berths at four locations. Read the terminal name on the ship's instructions; “Hamburg cruise terminal” is not a sufficiently precise destination for a taxi or journey planner.

  • HafenCity: the passenger entrance is Überseeboulevard 7. The U4 station Überseequartier is integrated into the development. Taxis use level −2, reached from Osakaallee/Überseeallee.
  • Altona: Van-der-Smissen-Straße 5. The adjacent Dockland ferry stop and bus stop Große Elbstraße offer public transport connections.
  • Steinwerder: Buchheisterstraße 16, within the port. A ship transfer or taxi is the straightforward option when shore time is limited.
  • Baakenhöft: Baakenhöft 1, a separate terminal at Kirchenpauerkai. The operator identifies HafenCity Universität as the nearby U4 station, reached across the Baakenhafen bridge. Do not confuse this terminal with the new HafenCity passenger entrance.

These are different facilities with different vessel limits.

About this port

Hamburg rewards a plan built around the ship's terminal. A call at HafenCity starts beside the inner-city waterfront; Steinwerder requires a separate journey through the port. For a short visit, choose one area — the Speicherstadt warehouses and HafenCity, for example — before adding attractions across the city.

Getting Around

From Altona, ferry 62 links Dockland with Landungsbrücken; bus 111 links Große Elbstraße with Altona station. From HafenCity, the U4 connects Überseequartier with Jungfernstieg and Hauptbahnhof. Use the HVV journey planner for the intended return as well as the outward journey.

Steinwerder needs particular care. The terminal operator's directions checked on 8 September 2026 describe direct bus 256 service on Saturdays and summer Sundays, with other connections from Argentinienbrücke (Fähre). The direct terminal bus takes about 22 minutes to U/S Elbbrücken, where the journey into the centre continues by rail. Bus departures from Argentinienbrücke fit port shift patterns, so use the HVV planner for the return connection.

Walking to Landungsbrücken is possible through the port and the Old Elbe Tunnel, using the route mapped by Hamburg Tourism. This is a substantial harbour walk, suitable when walking itself is part of the outing. Landungsbrücken is a waterfront destination separate from Hauptbahnhof.

Things to Do

Speicherstadt and HafenCity: make the canals and warehouse streets the core of a flexible outing. The UNESCO property is specifically Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District with Chilehaus, rather than the whole harbour or all of Hamburg.

Elbphilharmonie Plaza: the public viewing platform is a separate visit from attending a concert. Reserve the desired entry slot if it matters to the day; unreserved admission depends on availability. Check the venue's current ticket rules rather than assuming entry is always free.

For a short call, combine that waterfront walk with the Plaza only if the booking and terminal transfer fit. From Altona, the ferry journey can form part of this outing. From Steinwerder, leave time for the return road or bus connection before adding another district.
