Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Nord-Ost-Hafen is a documented cruise tender landing; the local destination is the Unterland waterfront around Landungsbrücke.

  • Walk: realistic once ashore for exploring Unterland's small pedestrian lanes; the lift provides the onward connection to Oberland instead of the stairs.

Expect a tender transfer for an offshore cruise call. Cruise passengers have been brought ashore by ship's tender at Nord-Ost-Hafen, but that documented landing should not be assumed for every ship.

Use your ship's instructions for the landing name, last return tender and any boarding-assistance requirements. Heligoland also has working harbours, including Südhafen and Helgolandkai, used by scheduled passenger vessels; their berths should not be assumed to serve your cruise ship.

About this port

Heligoland is best approached as a choice between two outings: the main island's upper cliff walk, or a separate ferry trip to Düne for its beaches and wildlife. Trying to do both on a short cruise call adds another boat connection to the return plan.

The Düne ferry is a separate connection from your transfer to and from the ship.

Getting Around

The main island has a lower area, Unterland, and upper area, Oberland. The tourism service identifies a lift between them, as well as walking routes. It describes the small streets as mostly without kerbs and marks a route for wheelchair users around the cliffs. The lift's operating times are displayed at its entrance. Electric taxis can be called on +49 4725 313.

Düne requires a separate municipal ferry, costing €6.00 per adult return (checked 2026-09-08). Its departure point can be the Landungsbrücke or the small Nordosthafen, depending on conditions; the municipal ferry notices identify the departure point. A Düne ferry ticket or departure time is separate from the arrangements for rejoining a cruise ship.

Things to Do

Main-island option: the tourism service describes an approximately 3 km cliff-edge circuit, taking in the Lange Anna rock formation and Lummenfelsen bird cliffs. Add the approach from your landing to that circuit distance. If time or conditions rule it out, the Hummerbuden by the inner harbour provide a shorter focus among the converted harbour huts and their cultural uses.

Düne option: see the seals from a distance. The municipality asks visitors to remain at least 30 metres away, keep escape routes clear and move farther back if an animal becomes alert to them. Choose this outing only when both ferry connections and the cruise return leave enough margin; wildlife sightings should never determine when to turn back.

Getting back to your ship

Düne requires a separate municipal ferry, costing €6.00 per adult return (checked 2026-09-08). Its departure point can be the Landungsbrücke or the small Nordosthafen, depending on conditions; the municipal ferry notices identify the departure point. A Düne ferry ticket or departure time is separate from the arrangements for rejoining a cruise ship.

Practical Information

Currency: euro. Police: 110; fire or ambulance: 112. Bring windproof clothing for an exposed coast and save the ship's contact details before going ashore.

Frequently asked

Can you explore Heligoland on foot after tendering ashore? Yes. Unterland has small pedestrian lanes, and a lift connects it with Oberland. The cliff-edge circuit is approximately 3 km, separate from the walk to it from the landing.

Do cruise ships dock or tender at Heligoland? Expect a tender transfer for an offshore cruise call. Phoenix Reisen documents ship's tenders landing at Nord-Ost-Hafen; the ship's own instructions identify the landing for your visit.

How much is the ferry from Heligoland to Düne? €6.00 per adult return, checked on 2026-09-08. It is a separate municipal ferry, distinct from the tender back to your cruise ship.

Is there a way to reach Heligoland's Oberland without climbing stairs? Yes. A lift connects Unterland with Oberland. The tourism service also identifies a marked cliff route for wheelchair users.
