Plan for tendering at Ios. Club Med's published port information explicitly describes anchoring here, while SeaDream's shore walk starts in the port area. Gialos is the harbour settlement; Chora is uphill to its east. Save the ship's landing location and last tender time before setting off.

About this port

Ios offers a choice between time by the harbour, a visit to Chora and an archaeological outing to Skarkos. The port and the hilltop settlement are separate places: arriving on the waterfront does not put you among Chora's lanes. Decide whether the day's priority is a village walk, archaeology or a beach, then build the transport around it.

For a few hours ashore, Chora with a return to the harbour is a manageable focus. Skarkos adds a different view of the island, with evidence of a substantial Early Cycladic settlement.

Getting Around

KTEL Ios publishes services from the port to Chora and Mylopotas Beach, with a separate offering for Manganari. The port–Chora–Mylopotas fare is €2.20 one-way, and the Manganari fare is €4.50 one-way, checked 2026-09-08 against the timetable valid from 6 September 2026. Keep the service that reaches the port comfortably before your ship's deadline as your target, with a later option only as contingency.

Walking is part of a Chora visit, including slopes and steps. Taking transport uphill can preserve time and energy for its lanes and viewpoints. The national tourism board also describes footpaths linking Chora, Skarkos and other parts of the island; those are walking outings in their own right, not an assumed accessible route from the cruise quay.

If using a taxi, arrange the return before setting out. A short call does not need a hire car if the port–Chora bus connection fits your timetable.

Things to Do

Make Chora the centre of the day. The South Aegean regional tourism site identifies the hilltop settlement, its churches, Panagia Gremiotissa and the open-air Odysseas Elytis theatre among the island's sights. Choose a compact route and a place to pause rather than trying to reach every viewpoint. Consult the regional Ios guide for the wider selection.

See Skarkos. The Ministry of Culture describes an organised archaeological site preserving a settlement of the third millennium BC. Its buildings and evidence of maritime trade provide a reason to look beyond the island's beaches. The conservation project received a European Union/Europa Nostra award; that award is distinct from UNESCO World Heritage inscription. Check the site operator's page for opening and admission information before arranging the visit.

Choose one beach. Mylopotas is served by the port–Chora bus route. Manganari has a separate service pattern, so inspect the return options especially carefully before making it your destination. Allow for getting from the bus stop to the beach, changing and buying refreshments; the time between buses is not all usable swimming time.

Getting back to your ship

If using a taxi, arrange the return before setting out. A short call does not need a hire car if the port–Chora bus connection fits your timetable.

Practical Information

Currency: euro. Language: Greek. Emergency: call 112 free of charge.

Carry water, sun protection and shoes suitable for stone paths. Ask about the actual step-free route if you have limited mobility, because transport to Chora does not establish access throughout its lanes. Verify museum and archaeological-site hours with their operators, and use the ship's stated return time when planning all connections.
