Small cruise ships berth at Pothia's central pier: a dated report places Arethusa alongside there on 25 March 2025, and the same operator's repeat Pothia calls are documented in March 2026. Variety Cruises also offers a Pothia shore visit in its 2026 excursion information. Use your ship's named quay and return meeting point for that day's call.
The Municipal Port Fund identifies Pothia as the island's main harbour. Official Pothia harbour page.
Passengers needing assistance should arrange the ship-to-street transfer with their cruise line before reserving activities.
About this port
Kalymnos's maritime past is a useful starting point for a shore visit. Pothia contains its principal harbour, the archaeological museum and a maritime museum explaining sponge diving. The sights described here are in and around Pothia.
For a few hours, a Pothia museum and waterfront outing is a coherent plan. Other coastal settlements, including Myrties, are separate destinations.
Getting Around
The municipal tourist office publishes bus information. Its timetable labelled valid from 29 June 2026 includes the Pothia–Armeos route; the notice describes temporary reduced service during bus maintenance. Earlier municipal route material traces the route through Chora, Myrties and Masouri. These buses are useful for trips beyond Pothia, while the town museums can form a walking itinerary.
For a tight itinerary beyond town, a taxi with a return pickup may be more practical than coordinating bus journeys. The archaeological museum is in Agia Triada; the maritime museum is in the coastal zone near the town hall.
Leave room for a delayed road journey. A second boat trip should only be added when its return can be reconciled comfortably with your ship's arrangements.
Things to Do
See the Lady of Kalymnos. The Archaeological Museum displays a Hellenistic bronze female statue recovered from the sea, alongside material tracing island life from prehistory to later periods. This is a substantial cultural stop rather than simply a place to fill time between transfers. The Ministry of Culture listing supplies the address, contact details and visitor information.
Learn about sponge diving. The municipality places the Maritime Museum in Pothia's waterfront area, next to the town hall, and describes displays about sponge fishing and its methods. It pairs naturally with a walk around the harbour. The municipal museums guide provides its visitor information.
Consider Chora for a more active visit. The former capital has a fortress above it, with surviving churches and views towards Pothia. This adds a climb and a road transfer to a town itinerary, so select it deliberately rather than as an automatic extra. The municipal sightseeing guide provides the historical context.
Getting back to your ship
