Plan for a tender transfer: Mano Maritime's current destination list explicitly labels Karpathos as a tender port, consistent with Club Med's documented anchoring calls. Confirm the landing harbour and last return tender with your ship; these town directions apply to Pigadia, while Diafani is a separate port.

Pigadia itself is the port settlement, so an arrival in its harbour places you at the town rather than at a remote resort transfer point. Mano's tender-access notice says passengers using wheelchairs or mobility scooters may be unable to transfer, depending on the boat, sea conditions and safety requirements. Arrange any mobility assistance with the cruise line before sailing.

If transport is meeting you, use the landing point supplied on board instead of a generic port address. Keep its contact details available in case the ship changes its shore arrangements.

About this port

Pigadia, also called Karpathos Town, is the island's capital and a port on its southeastern coast. It is the focus of this guide. A few hours can be spent around town and its archaeological museum; travelling to the mountain villages calls for a more deliberate excursion plan. Municipal Pigadia guide.

These directions apply only when the itinerary names Pigadia. Diafani, in the northern part of the island, is a separate harbour and gives different access to the village of Olympos.

Getting Around

The municipality confirms KTEL buses from Pigadia to Ammoopi and villages including Aperi, Volada, Othos and Arkasa. Its local transport page identifies a taxi stand on Dimokratias Street, with a displayed fare board.

For a short excursion, arrange the return pickup before departing. Olympos is roughly 42 km from Pigadia, about 40–45 minutes by car according to the municipality's arrival information. This is an inland road outing, not a neighbouring town walk. Allow additional time for the village visit and the return to your ship's passenger meeting point.

Summer excursion boats also feature in the municipal transport information. Only use one during a cruise call if its return time leaves a comfortable margin; a local boat's programme is not coordinated automatically with your ship.

Things to Do

Explore Pigadia at a measured pace. The town combines modern buildings with the setting of an ancient settlement. Begin around the harbour and choose a short route inland, leaving time to return for a meal. The municipality identifies remains of the early Christian basilica of Agia Fotini along the coastal road.

Visit the archaeological museum. The museum occupies the western wing of the former administrative building from the Italian period. Its displays cover prehistory, the island's ancient cities and its early Christian and Byzantine past. This gives a town-based itinerary a clear focus. The municipal museum guide describes the collection.

Choose Olympos for a longer outing. The northern mountain village is known for its distinctive traditions, architecture and music. Visit Greece describes the preservation of local dress and customs there. An organised excursion can make sense when the ship stays long enough, but select it for the village itself rather than combining it with several scattered beaches. National tourism overview.

Keep a beach plan flexible. The municipal transport page lists connections towards Ammoopi and other coastal destinations. Leave a generous return margin for a beach outing.
