Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: From Nafplio's harbour waterfront, head into the lower old town towards Syntagma Square and the Archaeological Museum.

  • Walk: realistic for a town visit; cruise operators run walking tours directly from the tender pier through the old-town streets to Syntagma Square.

Nafplio handles both docking and tender calls. La Belle de l'Adriatique has berthed in the port, while Seabourn and Silversea describe tender arrivals. Follow your ship's briefing for the day's berth or landing, boarding assistance and last-tender deadline.

The port adjoins the old town. The ports association gives approximately 700 metres to the city centre from the port, a general port reference rather than a measured route to Syntagma Square from an individual landing.

Save the excursion meeting point and return location before leaving.

About this port

Nafplio, also written Nafplion or Nauplia, sits at the head of the Argolic Gulf in the Peloponnese. Its old town combines Venetian and neoclassical buildings beneath the fortifications of Akronafplia and Palamidi. Bourtzi, the small island fortress offshore, provides a landmark when you return to the waterfront.

A few hours suit an old-town walk with one museum or castle. The ancient sites of Argolis offer another way to spend the call, but require transport and a deliberate choice of destination. Decide whether your priority is Nafplio itself or an archaeological excursion before committing your available time.

Getting Around

Explore the lower old town on foot, saving energy for any uphill visit. The waterfront and museum make a straightforward combination; Palamidi's long stairway needs a separate allowance for effort and time.

Taxis and intercity buses provide options beyond town. The ports association lists a taxi station 200 metres from the port and a bus station 300 metres away, using its general port reference. Use KTEL Argolida for current routes and departures. Check the return service before buying an outward ticket, especially for an archaeological site with a walk between its entrance and the bus stop.

For an excursion by taxi, agree the whole itinerary and return pickup in advance. Keep an inland trip focused on one principal site unless you have a well-timed organised excursion.

Things to Do

Old town and the archaeological museum. Wander towards Syntagma Square, then visit the museum in its Venetian-era building. Its collections explain the archaeology of Argolis; the bronze armour from Dendra is a particularly distinctive exhibit. Check the museum's official visitor page for opening days and tickets. Finish with a waterfront break and views towards Bourtzi.

Palamidi. This hilltop Venetian fortress contains a series of bastions linked by defensive walls. The stairway from town is long and steep, so choose it for an active visit and allow for the descent. From 1 November to 31 March, the fortress opens 08:30–15:30, with last entry 20 minutes before closing. It closes on 1 January, 25 March, and 25 and 26 December (Ephorate visitor information, hours checked 2026-10-31). The lower old town remains a worthwhile alternative if the climb does not suit you.

Ancient Argolis. Mycenae and Tiryns form a joint UNESCO World Heritage property, recognised for their Mycenaean remains. The Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus, including its ancient theatre, is a separate World Heritage property. These designations apply to the archaeological sites; do not treat a drive through modern Epidaurus as a visit to the sanctuary. Choose your excursion for the site itself and allow time to explore after the journey.

Getting back to your ship

For an excursion by taxi, agree the whole itinerary and return pickup in advance. Keep an inland trip focused on one principal site unless you have a well-timed organised excursion.

Practical Information

The currency is the euro (€) and the official language is Greek. Dial 112 in an emergency. Carry water and sun protection for exposed archaeological sites and the fortress, and wear footwear suitable for stone surfaces.

Confirm museum hours directly and check how long lunch will take before ordering. Keep the ship's contact details and your return deadline with you; passengers tendering need to reach the boat landing before the final transfer.
