Star Clippers documents tender transfers during its Poros calls, including a direct landing at Galatas on the mainland for its Epidaurus excursion. The municipal port organisation also identifies tender berthing along the waterfront. Use the landing and return point stated in the ship's daily programme.

A landing on the Poros town waterfront puts you near the coastal road and the start of the lanes. Poros has multiple passenger-boat boarding points, so remember the one assigned to your ship rather than returning to the first quay you see.

About this port

This guide covers Poros in the Saronic Gulf, with its town looking across a narrow channel towards Galatas on the Peloponnese. It is a compact stop for waterfront walking, a climb to the clock tower or a visit to a small museum. It should not be confused with the port named Poros on Kefalonia.

The town occupies the hillside of Sferia, with older houses and lanes above the coastal road. A few hours are best divided between the waterfront and one main sight. The monastery or a beach can be an alternative outing if transport and the ship's return time allow.

Getting Around

Stay on foot for the waterfront, then decide how much climbing to include. Cobbled streets and hillside routes call for shoes with grip. The clock-tower outing involves an ascent; passengers seeking a gentler visit can concentrate on the lower town and a café overlooking the channel.

The municipality's transport information says its free bus runs every 20 minutes in the tourist season from the New West Port towards the centre. It also lists the taxi rank on the central coastal road and passenger boats to Galatas. This municipal service is public transport, not a cruise shuttle.

For the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, the municipal guide describes road access and seasonal bus service. Arrange a taxi return or use the current bus timetable. A short distance on the map is not a reason to start a hot roadside walk without checking the route.

Things to Do

Clock tower and upper town. The tower dates from 1927 and forms an obvious landmark above the waterfront. Work it into a loop through the older lanes, allowing time to stop on the climb. You do not need to add a cross-island journey to get a sense of the town's setting.

Archaeological Museum. On Koryzi Square, the museum presents finds from Poros and the neighbouring mainland, including sculpture and inscriptions. Use the municipal sights page for the museum's context and contact information before making it the anchor of your visit.

Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi. About 4 km from Poros Town, this eighteenth-century monastery stands on a wooded slope. It offers a different setting from the harbour, but needs a separate transport plan. Observe posted visitor access and dress respectfully; do not assume the grounds are open whenever a bus is running.

A waterfront pause. Leave time for a meal or drink beside the channel. It is a useful final stop after an uphill walk, with an easier return to the meeting point than an additional trip to another part of the island.

Getting back to your ship

For the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, the municipal guide describes road access and seasonal bus service. Arrange a taxi return or use the current bus timetable. A short distance on the map is not a reason to start a hot roadside walk without checking the route.

Practical Information

Currency: euro. Language: Greek. Emergency number: 112.

Bring water, sun protection and a cover-up for religious sites. Agree taxi prices and payment methods before travelling. Keep the ship's contact number and final tender time with you. Avoid scheduling a mainland excursion solely because Galatas looks close: the crossing and onward travel each need a dependable return connection.

Frequently asked

Can you walk from the tender landing into Poros Town? Yes. A town-waterfront landing puts you beside the coastal road and the lanes of Poros Town, although tenders can use different waterfront points.

Is there a free bus into Poros centre? Yes. The Poros municipal bus runs free from the New West Port towards the centre every 20 minutes in the tourist season.

Do cruise ships dock or tender in Poros? They tender. Star Clippers documents tender transfers during Poros calls, and the municipal port organisation identifies tender berthing along the waterfront.

Is Galatas the same landing as Poros Town? No. Galatas is across the channel on the Peloponnese; Star Clippers uses it as a separate landing for its Epidaurus excursion.
