Cruise ships can come alongside at Preveza. Follow your ship's arrival arrangements for your call.
Use the passenger exit and permitted walking route announced for the call. The town's waterfront is the natural starting point once you reach the public streets. If walking is difficult or the berth is inconvenient, arrange transport through the ship or a local taxi service before disembarking.
About this port
Preveza sits on a peninsula at the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf, with a waterfront town on one side and the Ionian coast nearby. A short visit can stay entirely in the old streets and along the promenade. For a more archaeological day, the remains and museum of ancient Nicopolis lie outside town to the north.
Choose between those two approaches before leaving the ship. Nicopolis is an extensive ancient city, not one compact ruin beside the cruise quay, and the museum is a separate stop. Combining a carefully chosen part of the site with the museum is more useful than trying to cover every monument.
Getting Around
The old streets and promenade lend themselves to a walking visit. Keep a simple route back to the waterfront rather than following every side street, and allow time for a meal without watching the clock throughout.
For Nicopolis, arrange a taxi or excursion vehicle and name both the archaeological site and museum when discussing the plan. The ancient city lies north of Preveza; the separate museum is on the old Preveza–Ioannina road, at its fifth kilometre. Agree which entrances and monuments you will visit and where the driver will collect you.
Hellenic Heritage's driving estimates from central Preveza are about eight minutes to the museum and 11 minutes to the archaeological site (checked 2026-10-15). These are outward driving times; disembarkation, waiting, visits and the return journey take additional time.
KTEL Preveza publishes local and regional transport announcements. Use its current urban-service notice for routes and stops; touring dispersed Nicopolis monuments is more practical by taxi or excursion vehicle.
Things to Do
Old town and promenade. Browse the lanes behind the water, then return to the seafront for the harbour views and a café or taverna stop. This is the most flexible option if disembarkation is delayed or the call is short.
Ancient Nicopolis. Octavian founded the city to commemorate his victory at Actium. Roman and early Christian remains include defensive walls, an odeon, a theatre and basilicas. Decide on a manageable section and use its official visitor information, rather than assuming all monuments share one entrance or ticket.
Archaeological Museum of Nicopolis. The museum explains the city's foundation and development through objects from the excavations, giving context to the more dispersed remains outside. Its displays cover both Roman and Christian Nicopolis. Use the official museum page for current visiting information. The museum alone, followed by a town walk, can be a sensible shorter alternative.
The museum and site each list €10 full admission; budget for the two stops separately. Both close on Tuesdays from April to October (checked 2026-10-15; prices and hours can change). Use their linked visitor pages for opening hours and holiday closures.
Getting back to your ship
The old streets and promenade lend themselves to a walking visit. Keep a simple route back to the waterfront rather than following every side street, and allow time for a meal without watching the clock throughout.
Practical Information
Currency: euro. Language: Greek. Emergency number: 112.
Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes, particularly for an archaeological outing. Agree fares and return collection with your driver before leaving. Individual shops and attractions keep their own hours. Keep the ship's contact details accessible and include the journey through the port, not just the ride back into Preveza, in your return margin.
