Expect a tender transfer at Vathy. Dated reports describe both Celestyal Journey and EXPLORA I anchoring in Vathy Bay and bringing passengers ashore by boat. The Hellenic Ports Association also lists alongside facilities, but those specifications describe capacity rather than how these cruise calls operated.

Identify the return landing before setting off, and work from the last tender time supplied by the crew, allowing for the boat transfer and boarding queue.

About this port

This guide covers Samos Town, commonly called Vathy. Samos is also the island's name, and Pythagorio is a separate cruise port. Check the actual arrival town before planning a walk or booking transport.

Vathy suits a few hours around the waterfront and Archaeological Museum. An excursion to Pythagorio, the Heraion or the Tunnel of Eupalinos needs a separate transport plan. For a short call, the museum offers a useful introduction to the island's ancient past without requiring a journey to the archaeological sites themselves.

Getting Around

For a local visit, start with the waterfront and Pythagoras Square, then walk to the Archaeological Museum at Town Hall Square. The museum operator gives 4 minutes on foot from Pythagoras Square to the museum, or 7 minutes from the KTEL bus station. These are town walking legs after leaving the harbour.

For excursions, arrange a taxi with a clear return pickup or use an organised tour. KTEL Samos is the public-bus operator, with routes towards Pythagorio and Kokkari. Use its timetable page to plan both directions before leaving town.

Things to Do

Give the Archaeological Museum priority. The collection occupies two buildings and includes objects from the sanctuary of Hera, together with Archaic sculpture. Its monumental kouros and the family group by Geneleos help explain the island's artistic importance. Check the museum operator for opening days, last admission and current prices before choosing the order of your walk.

Explore the town at an unhurried pace. Combine the seafront with the streets around the central squares. Agios Spyridon stands beside the town hall, making it a convenient additional stop when open. Allow time for a drink or meal before returning to the waterfront.

Choose Pythagorio and its archaeology for a longer outing. The ancient fortified port and the separate Heraion sanctuary form the UNESCO World Heritage property, inscribed in 1992. This designation concerns those archaeological places, rather than all of modern Samos Town. Decide which site matters most before arranging transport; the sanctuary and tunnel are separate stops.

Plan the Tunnel of Eupalinos in advance. The ancient aqueduct was excavated through the mountain from opposite ends. It is a confined underground visit, so assess whether it suits everyone in your party. On 7 September 2026, Hellenic Heritage stated that visits require an appointment and listed the full-length route as temporarily closed. Confirm the available shorter routes and admission arrangements directly before travelling there.

Getting back to your ship

Practical Information

Greek is the official language and the euro (€) is the currency. Dial 112 for emergency help. Keep your ship's contact details and follow its instructions on documents to carry ashore.

Bring water and sun protection for town walks and exposed archaeological sites. Check museum opening information first if that is the focus of your day. For an independent excursion, leave time to return to the correct Samos port, not simply to the nearest harbour.
