Vathi is a tender call. The Greek Cruise Cluster describes cruise ships anchoring in the bay and transferring passengers ashore by ship's boats. Take the ship's advice on tender tickets, mobility requirements and the final return boat; rougher conditions can affect the transfer.

The Hellenic Ports Association describes the port as within Vathi's urban fabric, with taxi and bus stands 100 metres away. Keep the tender return point in sight before walking along the waterfront.

Do not follow directions for Piso Aetos unless the ship specifically instructs you to do so. The municipality identifies it as Ithaca's main ferry port, separate from Vathi. Frikes is another harbour used by island connections. A taxi driver needs the actual cruise tender landing, not simply a request for the ferry port.

About this port

This Vathi is the capital of Ithaca, also written Ithaki, in the Ionian Islands. It should not be confused with Vathy on Samos. The sheltered bay and town waterfront make a rewarding short visit, particularly if you prefer a walk and a small museum to a long excursion.

Ithaca's association with Odysseus gives the island a strong place in literature and local storytelling. Treat references to Homeric events as tradition, rather than proof that a particular landscape feature was the setting for the poem. The town's museums offer a more concrete introduction to the island's archaeology and maritime life.

Getting Around

A waterfront stroll is the easiest starting point. The municipality suggests allowing roughly an hour to walk from one side of Vathi to the other; that is the wider bay walk, not the journey from a tender to the centre. Shorten it whenever you wish, and add the lanes behind the waterfront if time allows.

Steps lead to higher neighbourhoods and viewpoints. Passengers avoiding climbs can concentrate on the lower town, checking individual museum entrances beforehand.

For an outing beyond Vathi, arrange transport with an agreed collection point and enough time to catch a tender well before the last one. If choosing a boat excursion, establish its route, landing possibilities and return arrangements before booking.

Things to Do

Walk the bay and town lanes. The municipal walking guide describes waterfront stops, small beaches and the streets around the Metropolis, the main church. Its Venetian bell tower and the nearby lanes provide a natural inland detour. A waterside break keeps you within the area served by the tenders.

Choose an archaeological visit. The Archaeological Museum of Vathy displays island finds spanning the Mycenaean to Roman periods. Pottery, everyday objects and votive material provide evidence of island life and connections beyond Ithaca. Check present access before making it the only purpose of your outing.

Explore the Folklore and Nautical Museum. Housed in the former electricity-generating building, this museum combines seafaring material with domestic and working life. The municipal description includes ship images, navigation instruments, tools, costumes and reconstructed household interiors. It offers a different perspective from the ancient finds, particularly for visitors interested in the people who lived and worked here.

Consider the coast by boat. Local excursions can reach bays outside town, and the municipality describes outings towards places such as Gidaki. For a short cruise call, make this an alternative to an extended town visit. Confirm that the operator's return plan leaves time for your ship's tender transfer.

Practical Information

Greek is the official language and the euro is the currency. Dial 112 for an emergency. Keep the ship's contact number and tender location with you.

Bring water and sun protection, and wear shoes suitable for both town steps and the boat transfer. Ask the ship directly about tender accessibility if you use a mobility aid.

Use the municipal museum information to identify the venues and current opening information. Allow for a queue at the return landing as well as the boat journey itself.
