About this port

Gallipoli suits a day spent close to the sea, moving between the castle, old-town churches and a leisurely lunch. The historic quarter's bridge and waterfront give you useful reference points when exploring its smaller streets. For a short cruise call, choose one interior visit and enjoy the town around it; travelling elsewhere in Salento can consume much of the available time.

Getting Around

Once at the old-town entrance, walking gives you the most flexibility. Start near the castle, choose a route towards the cathedral, then return via the waterfront or retrace your steps. Avoid adding a rigid sequence of visits: a church service or an unexpectedly closed attraction can easily change the order.

If you want a taxi for a longer trip, arrange it through local visitor staff before departure and agree the return meeting point.

Gallipoli belongs to the Ferrovie del Sud Est rail network, which includes a line towards Lecce. Check the actual train or replacement-bus service and return options before committing to an excursion. The operator's 2025–26 infrastructure document establishes the route; it is not a passenger timetable.

Things to Do

Begin at the castle. Beside the bridge into the historic quarter, the surviving fortress has substantial towers and a separate defensive outwork, the Rivellino. Its position makes it a useful first stop for understanding the town's defences. Check the regional castle listing and local visitor information for current admission arrangements before planning an interior visit.

Look closely at Sant'Agata Cathedral. Built between 1629 and 1696, it rewards attention to both its carved carparo-stone façade and the paintings inside. Make it the focal point of an old-town walk, with time to pause in the surrounding streets afterwards. The municipal description explains its architecture and principal works.

Consider Santa Maria della Purità. This smaller church offers another richly decorated interior, with paintings and carved wooden seating. It is an alternative to a second large attraction when you want to leave time for wandering. Consult the municipal church page for background, and respect worship when visiting.
