Pantelleria's principal harbour has old and new basins. The local port-services operator describes working quays and recreational moorings in this harbour, while the national park places the castle at the entrance to the old port beside the town centre.

Allow for a tender transfer. Dated local reporting of FTI Berlin's 2013 visit describes the ship waiting offshore and passengers landing in its own boats. That establishes the tender classification, although it does not identify a permanent landing quay.

Once at the old-port waterfront, the castle and town are close at hand. Allow for the operational part of the harbour as well as the stroll through town. Harbour description

About this port

Pantelleria offers a choice between the harbour town and an excursion into a volcanic, cultivated landscape. With a short cruise call, stay around the old port and castle. With longer ashore, arrange a single inland outing to the lake or vine-growing countryside, leaving enough time for the return journey.

The island's UNESCO recognition concerns the traditional practice of growing low, head-trained bush vines. It was inscribed on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014. This recognises a living agricultural practice; it does not designate the whole island as a World Heritage property. UNESCO listing

Getting Around

The town can be the whole outing if your time ashore is limited. For inland sights, organise transport before leaving the harbour. A taxi or prearranged driver is easiest to use when the return time and collection point are agreed at the start.

Public buses operate on Pantelleria. Marsala Travel Bus publishes the island's current weekday and holiday schedules and charges €1.80 one way for a single ticket bought on board. Check the route and return service for your intended stop; a bus passing a district does not necessarily stop at an attraction entrance.

Avoid treating an island circuit as a quick addition to a town walk. Choose one main excursion, count the time spent at the destination as well as on the road, and return before the ship's deadline with a margin for delays.

Things to Do

Castle and old harbour. The castle's volcanic stone gives a useful introduction to the island before you travel farther. The national park describes a building of medieval origin, subsequently altered, now associated with archaeological displays. It stands beside the old-port entrance. Check local visitor arrangements before relying on an interior visit; the exterior can anchor a short waterfront walk. National park castle profile

Bagno dell'Acqua, commonly called Specchio di Venere. In a July 2026 notice, the national park described conservation work around the lake's margins, with completion planned within 2026. That is a target, not confirmation that the works have finished (checked 2026-09-07). Check the park's update and local signs before choosing a route or approaching the shore.

Vine-growing countryside. A visit arranged with a grower can explain how vines are trained low in hollows and tended by hand. Confirm whether your visit includes a vineyard walk, a tasting or both, and how long it will take. The cultural interest is in the farming method and its transmission between generations, not simply in buying wine.

Getting back to your ship

Avoid treating an island circuit as a quick addition to a town walk. Choose one main excursion, count the time spent at the destination as well as on the road, and return before the ship's deadline with a margin for delays.

Practical Information

Italian is the main language, the currency is the euro (€), and 112 is the emergency number.

Take water, sun protection and suitable shoes for outdoor stops. Have any necessary supplies with you before leaving town. Confirm the return fare and payment method when arranging transport.

Opening hours and access conditions vary by attraction or park. A ship's short call is best used for an outing whose transport and return are already settled.
