Orientation, not a walking route

Plan for a tender arrival: Seabourn lists Ponza among its tender ports. Passengers transfer from the anchored ship by boat; the daily programme provides the final return tender time.
The town rises directly behind the harbour, with cafés and lower streets around the waterfront. Allow extra time for tender queues and follow the crew's instructions if conditions change. Tender transfer may involve steps and is not reliably step-free.
About this port
Ponza is a volcanic island in the Pontine group off Lazio. Its harbour makes a rewarding short visit in its own right: houses rise behind the waterfront, lanes climb away from the boats, and the sea remains the main point of orientation. Choose between a walk around the port, a trip towards Le Forna, or a coastal boat outing. Trying to combine all three leaves little margin for returning to your ship.
The island's Roman remains offer another reason to come ashore. Water-storage cisterns and structures associated with coastal villas survive alongside the later Bourbon harbour.
Getting Around
Walk for the harbour and adjacent lanes. The settlement rises above sea level, so a short route on a map may still involve a climb. Keep the waterfront as your fallback if you want a less strenuous outing.
The municipality identifies Schiaffini as the public bus operator and places its terminus on Via Banchina Nuova, near the ferry embarkation area. A standard single bus ticket costs €2 one way (checked 8 September 2026). Taxi stands are on Via Banchina Nuova and at Molo Musco for hydrofoil arrivals.
For Le Forna and the western coves, check the return bus before leaving the port. A beach boat adds another sea journey to an already tender-dependent day. Agree the return landing and timing before boarding, and avoid making the last available boat your only route back.
Things to Do
Explore the harbour on foot. Follow the waterfront, then take a short loop through the streets above it. The curved Bourbon harbour sits below the historic centre. This is a practical choice if you have only a few hours or prefer to stop regularly for refreshments.
Visit the Dragonara cistern. This Roman water-storage complex is in the historic centre and requires a guided visit. Check current arrangements with the Pro Loco visitor office. The Grotte di Pilato are a separate coastal archaeological site associated with a Roman villa; viewing them from a boat does not imply permission to enter independently.
Choose a beach with confirmed access. The Pro Loco lists boat connections from the port to Frontone and a path from Le Forna to Cala Feola. Confirm services and the walking approach before leaving. Its Chiaia di Luna guidance prohibits landing on the beach (checked 7 September 2026). Treat that bay as a view from the sea and respect any marked exclusion zone.
Getting back to your ship
For Le Forna and the western coves, check the return bus before leaving the port. A beach boat adds another sea journey to an already tender-dependent day. Agree the return landing and timing before boarding, and avoid making the last available boat your only route back.
Practical Information
Italian is the language to use locally, and the currency is the euro. Call 112 for an emergency. Carry water, sun protection and shoes with grip for slopes and steps. Keep your ship's contact details and return instructions with you.
Check individual opening arrangements for heritage visits and businesses. For lunch, leave enough time to walk back and join the tender queue; a harbour meal is easier to fit around a short call than an additional island excursion.
