Cruise ships can berth alongside. The port authority identifies Alto Fondale as the preferred cruise quay because it is next to the historic centre. It also says that Calata Italia, normally used by ferries, can accommodate cruises when Alto Fondale is occupied.

This makes your assigned berth important. At Alto Fondale the old town is close to the passenger exit; from another quay the waterfront approach will differ. Follow the designated passenger route through any operational area.

The central waterfront and the steep approaches to monuments should be considered separately when planning an accessible visit.

About this port

Portoferraio, on Elba's northern coast, combines a busy ferry harbour with a historic town of waterfront streets and Medici fortifications. Napoleon's island exile adds a museum theme, but the town also suits passengers who simply want a walk, harbour views and lunch within reach of the ship.

Choose between concentrating on the old town and adding a road or bus trip across Elba. The island has many settlements and beaches, and a few hours is better spent in one area than moving repeatedly between them. Within Portoferraio, allow for climbs from the waterfront to the upper historic streets.

Getting Around

Walk for the old harbour, shops and historic centre. For destinations beyond town, Autolinee Toscane's Elba page brings together urban and island bus routes. It lists line 1 to the Napoleonic villa at San Martino, as well as routes towards Porto Azzurro, Capoliveri and other settlements.

The operator distinguishes seasonal services and warns that some buses on Elba belong to other operators, so its tickets do not cover every service. The current tourist product is called Elba Pass; the operator's page carries its validity and prices.

Arrange a taxi or driver in advance if your plans depend on a particular return time. Do not assume a vehicle will be waiting at every cruise berth. A trip to one out-of-town attraction should leave room for delays on the return road and the walk back aboard.

Things to Do

Explore the Medici harbour setting. Walk around the Darsena Medicea and look up towards the fortifications before choosing which higher streets to tackle. This gives you a useful sense of the town's levels. Leave time for the descent rather than using your entire walking allowance to reach a viewpoint.

Visit the Palazzina dei Mulini. Napoleon's town residence is one of Elba's national museums. The Culture Ministry announced its reopening with restored gardens in June 2026. The museum visitor page carries day-specific opening arrangements.

Choose San Martino for a longer Napoleonic outing. The port authority places the country residence about six kilometres from Portoferraio. This is a separate journey, not another stop in the upper town. Match transport to confirmed museum access and avoid assuming both residences can be covered comfortably during a short call.

Consider a beach instead. The bus operator lists coastal services, including a seasonal route through Le Ghiaie and other nearby beaches. Select one stop with a realistic return. A beach visit and a full museum programme compete for the same limited shore time.

Getting back to your ship

Arrange a taxi or driver in advance if your plans depend on a particular return time. Do not assume a vehicle will be waiting at every cruise berth. A trip to one out-of-town attraction should leave room for delays on the return road and the walk back aboard.

Practical Information

Italian is spoken locally and the currency is the euro. The emergency number is 112. Bring water, sun protection and shoes suitable for sloping streets or steps. Keep the ship's berth and return time available offline.

Review individual opening hours and menus. Before boarding a bus, make sure the ticket is valid for that operator and journey.
