Positano is a tender destination. SeaDream confirms that its vessels anchor off the pier, and its walking excursion returns passengers to a tender landing. Expect a boat transfer into the lower town, with the exact landing and last return tender specified by your ship. Sea conditions can affect the transfer.

The waterfront around Spiaggia Grande is the starting point for exploring on foot. You can begin seeing the village from the shore, although the lanes climb steeply inland. Allow extra time for steps and uphill walking when planning your return.

Large coaches cannot reach the pier. If you have arranged a taxi or private car, establish its road meeting point and the walk to it in advance. The ship's daily programme is the source for assistance with its own tender transfer; a short distance here can include awkward steps.

About this port

For a short call in Positano, build your day around the lower village: the waterfront, Santa Maria Assunta church and the Roman remains beneath it. Climbing into the shopping lanes adds views, but also steps and a slower return. The town belongs to the Costiera Amalfitana World Heritage cultural landscape, inscribed by UNESCO in 1997; the designation covers the wider coast, including its settlements and cultivated terraces.

Getting Around

Walking suits a lower-town visit. Wear shoes with grip and leave enough energy for both uphill lanes and the descent back to the boat. Choose a turning point before fatigue or heat makes the return difficult.

The internal Positano and Praiano connections were reorganised in July 2026. SITA's service notice describes its Praiano–Positano services along the SS163, using SITA stops and tickets; match the stop to the part of town you need.

Coastal ferries offer another way to visit Amalfi. Match both journeys to Travelmar's dated timetable before buying a ticket. On a brief call, staying in Positano leaves more time ashore and fewer connections to manage.

Things to Do

Church and archaeology. Find Santa Maria Assunta by its tiled dome above the lower village. Inside is the Byzantine image of the Madonna and Child. The municipality traces the associated abbey to medieval times and records substantial eighteenth-century restoration. Visit respectfully around worship.

The MAR archaeological museum reveals a different Positano beneath the church: a Roman villa with richly painted walls, buried by mudflows following the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. It makes a focused cultural stop without travelling along the coast. Visits are guided; consult MAR's visiting conditions before booking. If you need the accessible route, contact the ticket office first: it passes through Santa Maria Assunta and depends on the church being open (checked 2026-09-07).

A waterfront pause. Spiaggia Grande gives you a view back towards the buildings climbing the hillside. Combine time by the beach with a café stop, or browse for locally made sandals, ceramics and lightweight clothing in the lanes. Keep the tender meeting point in mind while exploring.

A longer walking day. The Path of the Gods links the hills around Agerola and Nocelle and includes exposed sections. Treat it as a separately planned hike with suitable footwear, transport and ample return time, rather than an extension of a casual village stroll.

Practical Information

Italy uses the euro (€), and Italian is the local language. Dial 112 for emergency assistance. Carry water and sun protection, and retain your ship's contact details and tender instructions. Individual museum, church and shop pages carry their own opening arrangements.

Frequently asked

Can you walk from Positano's tender landing into the centre? Yes. The tender pier is at Spiaggia Grande beside the lower village and Santa Maria Assunta, but the lanes climb steeply inland.

Do cruise ships dock or tender in Positano? They tender. SeaDream states that its vessels anchor off the pier and transfer passengers ashore by boat.

Can a coach collect passengers at Positano pier? No. Large coaches cannot reach the pier, so road transport uses a separate meeting point above the waterfront.

Is Positano easy for passengers who avoid steps? No. The lower waterfront is the gentlest area, while many inland lanes are steep or stepped.
