Cruise ships have docked alongside at Banchina Cortese in Vibo Marina. The port authority's 2024–2026 plan confirms the quay's location on the eastern side of the harbour, and a report of a 2023 cruise call records passengers disembarking there. Follow the ship's daily programme for the allocated quay and exit.

The port combines commercial, fishing and leisure traffic. Use the authorised route out and confirm where your excursion vehicle can collect you. A coach may have to meet passengers away from the gangway, so tell the ship in advance if walking to the pickup point would be difficult.

Vibo Marina's waterfront is beside the harbour; reaching Vibo Valentia's hilltop centre requires an inland transfer.

About this port

A call at Vibo Valentia brings you to Vibo Marina, the coastal port on Calabria's Gulf of Sant'Eufemia. The historic city and its castle stand inland on higher ground. Decide early whether you want a simple waterfront visit, an archaeological outing to the upper city or a trip along the coast.

Choose one main destination: Vibo Marina for a harbour walk and seafood lunch, the Vito Capialbi museum for archaeology, or Pizzo for sea views and tartufo ice cream.

Getting Around

A prearranged car or ship excursion is the simplest way to organise a short visit to the castle and museum. Agree both the return time and collection place.

Ferrovie della Calabria lists the local Marinate service, also called urban line E, among its published timetables. The published school-day journey takes 53 minutes from Vibo Marina Chiesa at 08:02 to San Leoluca at 08:55. It is not a Sunday or public-holiday service.

For a coastal train journey, search from Vibo Marina in Trenitalia's planner. Vibo Valentia-Pizzo is a separate station. Allow for reaching the station from the port and returning to the correct quay; confirm any bus replacement or engineering-work notices before buying tickets.

Things to Do

Visit the castle and archaeological museum. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale Vito Capialbi occupies Vibo Valentia's medieval castle. Its collections trace the area's ancient past, including the Greek settlement of Hipponion. The inscribed Orphic tablet, associated with beliefs about the afterlife, is a particularly distinctive object. Combine the museum with a modest walk through the upper town rather than adding another distant attraction. Consult the Ministry of Culture's visitor page for opening and admission information.

Make Pizzo your coastal outing. The historic centre overlooks the sea around Murat Castle. Leave time to sit down for tartufo ice cream and enjoy the view. If your transport and available time allow, the rock-cut church of Piedigrotta is a separate stop; check visiting arrangements before including its interior. Italia.it's regional itinerary describes the town and coastal sights.

Stay close to the ship. Follow Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo for a waterfront walk and pause for lunch. This is the easiest option to shorten if disembarkation is delayed. Keep track of the route back to your assigned port entrance rather than returning to whichever quay looks closest.

Getting back to your ship

For a coastal train journey, search from Vibo Marina in Trenitalia's planner. Vibo Valentia-Pizzo is a separate station. Allow for reaching the station from the port and returning to the correct quay; confirm any bus replacement or engineering-work notices before buying tickets.

Practical Information

The euro (€) is the currency, and Italian is the official language. Dial 112 for emergencies. Carry the ship's local contact details and whatever identification it requires for boarding.

Bring water, sun protection and shoes suitable for historic streets. Discuss slopes and steps when arranging an inland excursion if mobility is a concern. Check museum opening and return transport before leaving, allowing for traffic and security checks.
