Narvik Havn identifies its central harbour at Piers 1 and 3 as a cruise location. Cruise Norway's port manual identifies Pier 3 and gives approximately 500 metres to the town centre. This is an alongside port, but the distance applies to that central cruise location rather than every quay around the bay.

Check the berth name with your ship. Fagernes is a separate port terminal, and some cruise-line information describes it as an arrival point. If your ship uses it, obtain the actual transfer arrangements instead of following central-pier walking advice.

The published cruise manual lists shuttles on request, meaning the transfer must be pre-arranged for the call rather than treated as a turn-up public service. Visit Narvik describes the central cruise harbour as suitable for exploring the town on foot. From a central berth, follow the designated exit uphill into town.

About this port

Narvik's port, railway and wartime history are closely connected. A visit works best when it follows that relationship: begin with the town's museums, then consider a rail excursion if its return fits the call. The surrounding mountains provide the setting, but current construction changes what visitors can do there.

As checked on 8 September 2026, Narvikfjellet's gondola and mountain restaurant are closed, with reopening planned for January 2027. Large parts of the mountain facility are also closed to public access during the works. Choose the museums or a confirmed railway outing for a visit in this period.

Getting Around

A town visit can combine museums, cafés and central streets on foot, with the amount of climbing depending on your route. Reis Nordland supplies current regional public-transport information.

The Ofoten Railway is an excursion in its own right. Check the exact train product, departure station and return before booking; a scheduled service and a sightseeing trip can have different stopping patterns. Include the journey back to Narvik when assessing any cross-border train trip.

Things to Do

Narvik War Museum. Start here to understand why iron ore, the railway and the harbour made Narvik strategically important in 1940. The regional tourism board places the museum at the centre of its suggested approach to the area's wartime history. Give the subject enough time rather than treating it as a quick stop between distant excursions.

Narvik Museum and the town's industrial story. The other museum offers a complementary perspective on the development of the town and its railway connection. This pairing is especially useful when the weather limits outdoor sightseeing. Check current access through the destination's visitor information and each museum before setting off.

The Ofoten Railway. The route links Narvik with the Swedish border through the surrounding mountain landscape. A confirmed rail outing can show a different side of the port's history while providing views beyond the town. Reserve enough time to reach the station and return to the correct quay, not just for the train ride itself.

Waterfront and town walking. A shorter circuit can provide views towards the fjord and a chance to explore central Narvik at your own pace. Keep it separate from the closed resort areas. Do not attempt to replace the unavailable gondola with an improvised walk through construction zones or closed mountain terrain.

Getting back to your ship

Practical Information

Norwegian kroner (NOK) are used, with card payment widely accepted. Norwegian is spoken and English is commonly understood. Museum hours and rail services vary; consult current operator information rather than using old printed schedules.

Bring a waterproof layer and footwear suitable for slopes. For emergencies, call 110 for fire, 112 for police or 113 for an ambulance. Keep the ship's berth and contact details with you; the central harbour and Fagernes require different return plans.

Frequently asked

How far is Narvik town centre from the cruise port? About 500 metres from central Pier 3. That figure does not apply to the separate Fagernes terminal.

Can you walk from Narvik cruise port into town? Yes from the central cruise harbour. Visit Narvik describes shops, restaurants and attractions as close enough to explore on foot, although routes rise uphill from the waterfront.

Is there a shuttle from Narvik cruise port? Only when it has been pre-arranged for the call. The Cruise Norway manual lists shuttle buses on request, so the cruise line's arrangement and price vary by ship.

Do cruise ships dock or tender in Narvik? They dock. Narvik Havn identifies Pier 3 as its cruise pier, while some ships use the separate Fagernes terminal.
