Plan for a tender landing. Cruise Norway's port information describes anchorage and tender facilities, with the village centre approximately 200 metres from the landing area. Follow the ship's instructions for tender tickets, the shore meeting point and the last return boat.

Allow for the transfer itself when arranging an independent outing. The time the ship anchors is not necessarily the time you can begin walking ashore, and a return queue can reduce your usable time in the village.

A walk around the centre does not normally require a transfer. The port information lists transport that can be arranged in advance for excursions, separate from the absent port shuttle.

About this port

Ulvik sits beside a sheltered branch of the Hardangerfjord, with orchards climbing the surrounding slopes. Fruit growing and the writing of local poet Olav H. Hauge give this small village much of its character. A short visit can combine the waterfront, poetry centre and church; an orchard visit needs more walking and some advance planning.

Choose between spending your time in Ulvik and taking a longer excursion into the surrounding region. The fjord views begin at the landing, so there is no need to travel to another town to enjoy the landscape.

Getting Around

Start on foot for the waterfront and village sights. The fruit farms are farther out: Cruise Norway gives an approximate distance of 2–3 km from the port. Check the route to the particular farm you intend to visit and allow for slopes, time at the farm and the return walk.

Skyss provides current regional journey planning and ticket information. Plan both directions before using a bus for an outing beyond Ulvik. An excursion transfer should have an agreed collection time and return point.

Things to Do

Explore the Hauge Centre. Housed in the former municipal building beside the fjord, the centre introduces Olav H. Hauge through poetry, recordings and film. It also explores poetry from other countries and offers ways for children and adults to engage with words. This is a useful indoor choice when the weather discourages a longer walk. Use the museum's website for current visiting information.

See Ulvik Church. The village church dates from 1859; its floral interior decoration was painted by Lars Osa in 1923. Check access locally and fit a visit around services. The church and waterfront can be combined without committing to a countryside excursion.

Follow part of the Fruit and Cider Route. The route connects Ulvik Frukt & Cideri, Syse Gard and Hardanger Saft- og Siderfabrikk. Farm shops offer local produce, while guided visits explain how the fruit becomes juice and cider. Consult the regional tourism board's route information and arrange a tasting before walking out. A farm shop being open does not necessarily mean a tour is available.

Take a countryside excursion if time permits. Voss and the landscapes around the Hardanger Bridge are road outings from Ulvik. Compare the complete return journey with your tender deadline before selecting one. For a shorter call, an orchard walk and time beside the fjord leave more flexibility than an itinerary combining several regional attractions.

Practical Information

Norway uses the Norwegian krone (NOK). Norwegian is the local language and English is widely understood. Emergency numbers are 110 fire, 112 police and 113 ambulance.

Bring rain protection and shoes suitable for wet paths. Orchard roads pass working farms and private homes: use public routes, keep gates as found and enter farm premises only where visitors are welcomed. Check church, museum and farm opening for your actual visit date rather than relying on a general summer timetable.
