Cruise ships normally use alongside berths. Trondheim Havn currently identifies Quay 68 at Brattøra, Quay 30 at Ila and Quay 1 on Pir 1, the last subject to coastal-service use.
Cruise Norway gives roughly 800 metres to the centre from the main cruise quay; Nidaros Cathedral is farther into town. Ila is a separate arrival area to the west, so the Brattøra figures do not apply there.
The port factsheet lists shuttles supplied by prior arrangement. Follow the marked exit through the port and arrange any needed gangway assistance with your ship.
About this port
Trondheim offers a compact historical city visit around Nidaros Cathedral, the Nidelva river and the wooden streets of Bakklandet. These sights combine naturally into a walk with a museum or café stop. Rockheim, near the Brattøra waterfront, adds a very different look at Norwegian culture through popular music.
For a few hours ashore, stay in the city. Its cathedral, riverfront and shopping streets provide enough variety without committing much of the call to a regional road journey.
Getting Around
Walking links the main sights once you reach the centre. A route towards the cathedral, across the Old Town Bridge and through Bakklandet gives you both major monuments and the river setting. Account for the walk back to Brattøra or Ila rather than finishing your itinerary in the middle of town at the return deadline.
Use AtB for departures and onward bus journeys. Buy your ticket before boarding and retain Pirbadet as the return destination for the main cruise quay.
Things to Do
Make Nidaros Cathedral your main visit. The cathedral is Norway's national shrine and an important medieval pilgrimage destination. Its sculpture and stained glass merit time inside, rather than only a photograph from the square. The neighbouring Archbishop's Palace and Crown Regalia can extend the visit; check the cathedral operator's current information for which areas are open and the relevant tickets.
Cross to Bakklandet. The Old Town Bridge and the timber buildings beside the river are a natural continuation after the cathedral. Walk through Bakklandet's streets, pause by the water and choose a café if time allows. This makes an adaptable outing: you can shorten the loop without waiting for transport back from the countryside.
Visit Rockheim. At Brattørkaia 14, the museum explores Norwegian popular music and cultural change from the 1950s onwards. Interactive displays and the Sound Lab make it an option for visitors who enjoy participating as well as looking. Check Rockheim's visitor information and opening page before arranging the rest of your day around it.
Add a viewpoint only if time permits. Kristiansten Fortress features in the port's city excursion programme and overlooks the urban landscape. Reaching a viewpoint adds climbing or transport to the flatter central walk. Passengers who prefer to avoid hills can concentrate on the cathedral, river and waterfront instead.
A port call does not require a full-day itinerary. One interior visit and a relaxed walking circuit often leave a more comfortable return margin than attempting every museum in the area.
Getting back to your ship
Use AtB for departures and onward bus journeys. Buy your ticket before boarding and retain Pirbadet as the return destination for the main cruise quay.
Practical Information
The currency is the Norwegian krone (NOK). Norwegian is the local language and English is widely understood. Call 110 for fire, 112 for police or 113 for an ambulance.
Wear shoes suitable for wet paving and bring rain protection. Church services may affect sightseeing access. Check current opening arrangements for museums, especially on Mondays and public holidays, and retain the quay name for your return.
