The port has cruise berths in the city centre and at Breivika, approximately 4 km north of the centre. Prostneset is the central passenger-terminal area. Confirm your quay onboard before choosing a walking route or arranging collection.

From Breivika, follow the port's pedestrian signs and use the underpass and designated crossings. Do not cross the main roads directly to shorten the journey. The port's Breivika access instructions explain both walking and bus approaches.

The taxi rank at Breivika is on Terminalgata.

About this port

Tromsø offers a city visit shaped by Arctic exploration, research and its setting between island, sound and mountains. For a short call, concentrate on the central waterfront, Storgata and the Polar Museum. The Arctic Cathedral and Fjellheisen cable car are across the sound on the mainland and need extra transport time.

Your berth makes a significant difference. Arriving in central Tromsø and docking at Breivika are both alongside calls, but only one starts immediately beside the city streets.

Getting Around

For the return to Breivika, take bus 42 towards Stakkevollan and get off at Breivika. Use Svipper for departures and include the walk from the stop to the ship in your return plan.

Mainland travel requires particular attention during bridge works. Verified 2026-09-07: Svipper's current notice gives a maintenance phase from 17 August to 1 November 2026, with ordinary traffic diverted and bus routing dependent on the time of day. Some stops remain out of use. Pedestrians and cyclists can cross the bridge. Use the operator's current notice and journey planner for your actual trip.

Things to Do

Visit the Polar Museum. At the northern end of downtown Tromsø, the museum covers hunting, trapping, polar expeditions and Svalbard's cultural history. Its historic subjects give context to the waterfront outside. Check UiT's visitor page for admission and guided visits, then combine the stop with the central streets.

Walk through the centre. Storgata and the waterfront can form a flexible route with cafés and shops. Keep the Polar Museum, city-centre cathedral and harbour in one area of your plan. The Arctic Cathedral is a different building across the sound.

Visit the Arctic Cathedral. The building in Tromsdalen is reached on foot over Tromsø Bridge or by a suitable bus connection. Consult its own website for visiting and concert arrangements. Bridge works make a route planned from an old bus description unreliable.

Consider Fjellheisen. The cable car climbs to Storsteinen for views over Tromsø and the surrounding landscape. Check operating conditions before travelling across town and leave room for queues. Verified 2026-09-07: the operator says it cannot accommodate wheelchair users or visitors using walking frames during construction work. Confirm the latest access and service information before making plans.

Stay near Breivika. The Arctic–Alpine Botanical Garden is within walking reach of this port area and provides a shorter seasonal outing. Use the road underpass and check the pedestrian route and local garden information before setting off.

Getting back to your ship

For the return to Breivika, take bus 42 towards Stakkevollan and get off at Breivika. Use Svipper for departures and include the walk from the stop to the ship in your return plan.

Practical Information

The currency is the Norwegian krone (NOK). Norwegian is spoken locally and English is widely understood. Emergency numbers are 110 fire, 112 police and 113 ambulance.

Bring layers and rain protection. Save the berth name as well as the ship's return time. Opening arrangements and transport diversions deserve another check shortly before travel.
