Ships normally dock in Motril's commercial port. The MedCruise profile identifies Poniente and Dique quays; its anchorage entry describes a permission, while Port Authority call reports document alongside calls at Dique.

The Andalusia tourism port guide gives 2.5 km from the port to Motril and identifies the free shuttle. Port Authority call reports place the town stop at the tourist office below the sanctuary, from where passengers can enter the commercial centre.

Use the port shuttle for the town centre. Taxis and tourist information are also provided near the berthing point.

About this port

Motril is the coastal arrival point for a choice of very different days: the town and its sugar-making heritage, a Costa Tropical outing, or a longer excursion to Granada. Decide which one you want before leaving the ship, because the town centre is separate from the port.

A local visit gives you more flexibility. Granada can be rewarding, but the transport and any Alhambra admission need to be arranged as a complete plan rather than added after a morning in Motril.

Getting Around

Once in central Motril, choose a compact walking route with one main attraction. The sugar museum and religious landmarks are separate stops; allow for walking between them and a break before the return transfer.

For the coast, use a planned taxi journey or excursion with a clear return arrangement. A beach stop should have its own time allowance rather than being squeezed between a city visit and the last shuttle.

Granada requires a substantially different programme. Fit the outward journey, admission appointment, visit and return into the call as one plan. An excursion labelled “Granada” does not necessarily include the Alhambra or its Nasrid Palaces.

Things to Do

Visit the Pre-industrial Sugar Cane Museum. The museum at Ingenio de La Palma uses archaeological remains and reconstructions to explain milling, pressing and processing sugar. This gives a local visit a subject closely connected with Motril's development. Consult the municipal museum page for current visitor arrangements before setting off.

Explore the sanctuary surroundings. Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza is an important local religious landmark. Include it if the route and access suit your mobility; the museum and sanctuary have separate visitor arrangements.

Choose a coastal excursion. Salobreña and the surrounding Costa Tropical offer an alternative to the inland city trip. Settle the exact destination and journey back in advance; a hilltop town walk and beach time are different uses of the day.

Make Granada the main event. The Alhambra, Generalife and Albayzín together form a UNESCO World Heritage property. If visiting the Alhambra, use the Patronato's visitor information to confirm the ticket type, entry requirements and timing. Allow a margin for the return road journey.

Getting back to your ship

Granada requires a substantially different programme. Fit the outward journey, admission appointment, visit and return into the call as one plan. An excursion labelled “Granada” does not necessarily include the Alhambra or its Nasrid Palaces.
