Arrival & Getting Ashore
Getting to the centre: From Hernesaari's LHD cruise quay, use the Central Railway Station (Päärautatieasema) as your city-centre tram destination.
- Walk: realistic for walkers comfortable with a longer outing; the port's walking route passes the outdoor art wall and Löyly into Eira before continuing towards the centre.
- Public transport: walk to Eiranranta for HSL tram 6 towards Arabia and leave at Päärautatieasema; an adult AB ticket costs €3.30 one way in the HSL app or from a machine, or €3.50 one way with contactless payment.

The Port of Helsinki publishes these alongside cruise locations:
- Hernesaari, LHB/LHC: Munkkisaari quays at Hernematalankatu 6.
- Hernesaari, LHD: at the southern end of Hernesaari, addressed as Hernesaarenranta 15.
- Katajanokka, ERA: at the outer end of the district, on Katajanokanranta.
- Katajanokka, EKL: on the western side, at Katajanokan laituri 2.
These are separate arrival points. Save the quay code and passenger exit for the return; directions to a ferry terminal may take you to a different vessel. Use the signed passenger exit.
HSL's current route map shows tram 6 starting at Eiranranta and running through the Central Railway Station to Arabia. The tram stop requires a walk from the cruise quays. The port's illustrated shore route reaches Eira after about 20 minutes on foot, passing the art wall and Löyly; Eira is an intermediate neighbourhood, not Senate Square. A pre-arranged taxi can reduce walking.
About this port
Your berth makes a substantial difference to a Helsinki port day. Start by identifying the quay, then choose a city visit around Senate Square or an outing to Suomenlinna. The fortress adds a ferry journey in each direction, so leave it out if the call does not allow a comfortable return to the ship.
Getting Around
HSL's visitor guidance explains how to buy tickets through its app, ticket machines or contactless payment. Its journey planner also identifies the zones needed. Compare a day ticket with separate journeys after deciding your route.
The public Suomenlinna ferry leaves from the eastern side of Market Square, in front of the Presidential Palace. An HSL AB ticket covers the crossing. Allow for waiting at the landing as well as the crossing when choosing the return ferry. Keep the onward trip from Market Square to your cruise quay separate in the return plan.
Things to Do
- Senate Square and Helsinki City Museum: a focused city option. The museum at Aleksanterinkatu 16 explains Helsinki's history and gives you an indoor stop. Its accessible entrance is through the gateway and courtyard at that address; other entrances have different access limitations.
- Suomenlinna: the sea fortress has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1991. Make it the main outing rather than adding it at the end of a city tour. Decide which return ferry leaves enough margin for the port transfer before boarding the outward service.
Getting back to your ship
Return: the ship's all-aboard time governs the day. Allow for the full journey to the correct quay, not simply to the harbour district.
Practical Information
