The port's technical brochure distinguishes Kantasatama, approximately 700 m from Kotka's centre, from Mussalo, approximately 8 km away. The port publishes these as approximate distances to central Kotka. Hamina is a separate arrival area, around 5 km from Hamina's own centre; those directions cannot be used for a Kotka walk.
Cruise ships normally berth alongside in these port areas. The port's technical brochure places Kantasatama's cruise quays I1–I3 at 60.473917° N, 26.955083° E.
For Mussalo, make a road transfer the basis of the day. The port's Cruise Baltic profile gives about 8 km and 15 minutes by road from B1–B4 to central Kotka and requires pre-registered vehicles. Its controlled port exit is not open to independent walking or cycling. The former Jonne & Minne bus 23 to Mussalo port was withdrawn from 1 June 2026, checked 2026-09-08. At Kantasatama, use the designated passenger route to reach public streets; shuttles are available by arrangement.
About this port
Kotka offers two useful local plans: maritime museums at Vellamo or a walk through the parks of Kotkansaari. Before choosing, establish your arrival harbour. HaminaKotka operates several distinct cruise areas, and a booking using the regional port name does not necessarily put you beside central Kotka.
Getting Around
Keep a short independent visit on Kotkansaari. Vellamo and Sapokka are separate stops on the island: choosing one main visit leaves more flexibility than trying to include both and a trip to Hamina. If your ship lands in Hamina, arrange the full outward and return transfer before committing to Kotka.
The regional tourism board publishes a Sculpture Promenade connecting Kantasatama with Sapokka. Use a section of it for a flexible walk, turning back when the remaining time requires it; completing the whole route is optional.
Things to Do
- Sapokka Water Garden: a park beside the small-boat harbour in southern Kotkansaari, with streams, ponds and a waterfall. Combine the garden with a pause at the marina rather than assuming this harbour is your ship's berth.
- Maritime Centre Vellamo: an indoor alternative at Kantasatama, with maritime and regional museum exhibitions. Check its visitor page for the museum opening arrangements. The operator states that the museum-vessel season ended on 16 August 2026, checked on 2026-09-07; do not include a ship interior in a later call without confirmation.
- Sculpture Promenade: an outdoor option between the harbour and parks. Select a manageable stretch from the tourism board's route instead of treating it as a compulsory circuit.
Sapokka Water Garden
Sapokka’s waterfall and stream are designed to circulate and oxygenate the bay’s water. Above the waterfall, a stone display shows Finnish stone types and ways of working them.
