Cruise ships can berth alongside at Ajos harbour, approximately 10 km by road south-west of the city centre. It is an enclosed working port where movement requires authorisation. Cruise passengers have used coaches from the quay, but the precise berth, passenger exit and available transfers depend on the call.
If your ship confirms Ajos, plan for a road transfer and obtain the exact vehicle meeting point. Do not set out through the operational port on the assumption that a town walking route is open. Use the ship-arranged coach or a pre-arranged taxi for the port transfer.
About this port
Kemi's SnowCastle area includes an indoor snow-and-ice attraction that operates year-round. A visit outside winter can therefore include more than a town walk. Establish your ship's arrival and return transport before booking: the Ajos commercial harbour is separate from the waterfront near the city centre.
Getting Around
For a brief visit, concentrate on the SnowCastle area or the Inner Harbour after your transfer. These are town destinations, separate from the Ajos commercial port. Arrange the return pickup at a named place and keep the driver's contact details.
A short local programme leaves more margin than an inland excursion. If considering a trip beyond Kemi, get the full driving time, visit duration and return allowance from the operator before deciding that it fits your call.
Things to Do
- SnowExperience365 and the SnowCastle area: the refrigerated indoor attraction offers snow and ice throughout the year. Visit Kemi's 2026 visitor guide also lists a gemstone exhibition in the complex. Check the attraction's visitor information for the date of your call; year-round operation does not guarantee admission at every hour.
- Inner Harbour: a separate waterfront destination on Rantabulevardi near the city centre, suitable for a shorter local visit. Give the street and town-harbour name when requesting a drop-off; simply asking a driver for “the port” is ambiguous.
- Icebreaker Sampo: a separate organised experience advertised by Kemi's municipal tourism company. Establish the actual programme and season with the operator; a call by your ocean cruise ship does not include a Sampo sailing or permission to board it independently.
Getting back to your ship
Return: retain the ship's boarding deadline and the exact port pickup instructions. For an indoor snow visit, take an extra warm layer.
