Cruise vessels can berth alongside in Reggio Calabria. The port authority identifies Banchina Nuova di Levante as a cruise quay; its cruise brochure also lists Vecchia di Levante and Margottini. Your ship's assigned berth determines the gangway location and permitted exit. This is a working port with controlled areas, so follow the crew's directions to the passenger route or any arranged vehicle.
Lido station opens onto Piazza Indipendenza. From there, cross the square and take Via Vollaro uphill: the museum gives a further two-minute walk to its entrance on the left.
About this port
Reggio Calabria makes a rewarding city stop on the mainland side of the Strait of Messina. For a few hours ashore, give the National Archaeological Museum priority, then spend the remaining time along Lungomare Falcomatà or in the streets inland. The museum's Riace Bronzes and the view across the strait offer two very different ways into the place without requiring a long excursion.
Scilla is an alternative coastal outing. Choose it when your call allows enough time for the journey and a reliable return; avoid making it a rushed addition to a substantial museum visit.
Getting Around
Once outside the port, a museum-and-waterfront programme is well suited to walking. The municipality describes Lungomare Falcomatà as approximately 1.7 km long, so walking its full length and returning is a more substantial outing than simply reaching the museum. Choose a turning point that fits your available time and energy.
ATAM operates city buses, while regional trains connect Reggio with surrounding places. The municipal transport guide identifies the services and operator. For a short central visit, weigh the walk against the time needed to locate a stop and check a departure. For a taxi return, use the passenger entrance serving your ship's berth.
For Scilla, check the actual outward and return transport before leaving Reggio. A prearranged car or ship excursion is another option. Keep the port's re-entry arrangements and all-aboard time with you.
Things to Do
Start with the archaeological museum. The museum is at Piazza De Nava, 26. Its collections cover Calabria from prehistory through its Greek settlements and Roman period. The Riace Bronzes are displayed here, in the museum's section devoted to ancient Reggio.
Access to the bronze room is controlled for conservation, with a preliminary stop in designated buffer spaces. Allow time for that process. Check the museum's visitor information for opening arrangements, tickets and notices, and tell the ticket office about any access assistance you need.
Follow the waterfront. Lungomare Falcomatà gives views over the strait and a sequence of gardens, monuments and archaeological remains, including Greek walls and Roman baths. It is a useful route for a flexible stroll after the museum. Move inland for a café break or shorten the walk when it is time to head back north towards the port.
Add the Aragonese Castle. In Piazza Castello, the surviving round towers provide another focus for exploring central Reggio. The building hosts exhibitions and cultural events. Check the municipal castle information for access rather than relying on fixed hours in a general guide.
Choose Scilla for a separate excursion. Ruffo Castle stands on the coastal promontory dividing the waterfront districts, including Chianalea. The sea setting is the main reason to go. Leave sufficient time to explore on foot as well as to travel back to Reggio.
Getting back to your ship
For Scilla, check the actual outward and return transport before leaving Reggio. A prearranged car or ship excursion is another option. Keep the port's re-entry arrangements and all-aboard time with you.
Practical Information
Italy's currency is the euro (€), and Italian is the local language. Dial 112 in an emergency. Carry water and sun protection for the promenade, and keep your ship card and port contact details accessible. Establish the return gate or vehicle meeting point before leaving: reaching the harbour boundary may not be the final stage of boarding.
